I am here making art
because I want and need connection with my community.
I am lawyer by day which is probably excessively obvious by now.
The reason you are now at the end of a gigantic terms and conditions
contract on an artist’s website is because I spent so. Many. Years.
Sad and alone, disconnected from my own reality
even if I was around people. I love my job, but
I refuse to be miserable and alone,
even if my understanding of law necessitates me
writing a gigantic block of text to make sure that
I can be both employed in my craft and supported
spiritually by doing the craft of art which led
me to law.
If this seems unreasonable to you, I assure you
it isn't. This is entirely necessary given to realities
trans people like me face when trying to be employed
in a deeply transmysogynist society. Being trans does not
mean I must lose myself to protect the rule of law. If you
genuinely think that I'm being unreasonable, I genuinely think
you need to question why it is that you are struggling to
admit that our legal and political systems have been harmful to trans
people.
I practice law as a trans woman. This is the kind of shit
I have to do. If you don't like it, change the society
and legal system which requires me to spend 15 hours
writing a terms and conditions statement to make sure
I am free from discrimination simply so I can make art
I need to make in order to survive in a transmysogynist
society. Why must I use a code to protect myself from
verbal, emotional, and harrassment not just on the internet,
but also casually in the culture and community of
a legal practice I have spent years developing?
These questions are for you to answer. I do what I must
to be free, practice law, and make sure I am well in
my soul to practice law well.
I practice law, it does not define me. I refuse to give up my humanity
for my job. If you happen to be an former, active, or perspective
employer or client and this bums you out, go fuck yourself. It’ll do you good.
I’m a good lawyer. I’m also a trans woman who needs her community.
My community is sexual. Women in general are sexual.
There is no implicit expectation in my career that can or will divorce
me of this hard-earned freedom. This self expression
of sexuality is fundamental to my and our liberty
as women.
I practice art because it inspires me. I need art to make sense of my
world. I need art to understand myself. I need art to connect with
people in my community who can teach me how better to love, fuck,
grow, make mistakes, apologize, cry, laugh, mourn, touch, and
be touched.
I will not remove myself from the pleasure of living.
